Post # 7; Chapters 25-29, "Finally Fishin'"

Jack finally gets to go fishing! Under the watchful eye of Catcher, Jack begins to learn the basics of the fishing business. Catcher seems to enjoy his opportunity to tutor Jack, and adding Everett to the trio seems to make a great team.

Luther and Freeman miss an opportunity to plunder another ship when it sinks after crashing into the rocks at Southern Head. Meanwhile, Jack convinces Catcher to go for a visit to Two Island - where Jack's property is - and they stumble upon some strange constructions, as well as a stray dog that Jack nurses back to health. While they seem suspicious, are they beginning to piece the plans of Luther and Freeman together?

We catch yet another glimpse of Nurse Jenny, being rescued from a torpedoed hospital ship in the Mediterranean. Yet Jack seems to still be enamoured with Elizabeth. Has he given up on Jenny?

a) The pace of the action is beginning to pick up and the structure of the book is changing. The chapters are becoming shorter and scenes switch back and forth more quickly. Why do you think the author has done this?

b) A dozen neighbors help Jack and Catcher get the boat into the water. A while back Jack was an outcast. How do you think his growing friendships / partnerships with Catcher and Everett - obviously well-respected members of the community - has affected how other people view Jack?
c) What is it that draws Jack, Catcher and Freeman together? What traits do they share? How are they different? (Note: This was supposed to read Jack, Catcher and Everett...sorry. Nasis students and GM students who haven't blogged as of Monday morning, compare these three.)

a) I think that he does this so we are in suspence.

b) I think that it has changed some people's veiw of him for the better and some for the bad because some people think that catcher shouldn't be fishing.

c) The thing that draws them all together is fishing. The traits that they share is that they all love fishing.

1. I think they will begin to piece the plans of Kuther and Freeman togetherf.

2. I think he still has feelings for Jenny because he will alwats remember the days in the prison.

3. I think the author has the chapters shoter because he wants us to stay in suspense and I think he is switching scenes because he wants us to know what is going on with all the chracters.

4. Hus friendship with Catcher and Everett show people on Grand Manan that he isn't all that bad.

5. They're different because Jack and Catcher help people, while Freeman does dirty work.
What draws them together is that they all like going fishing and they like Grand Manan.

a)I think he is trying to make us think about what we think will happen in the story.
b) Well, we know that Jack didn't really know anyone from Grand Manan, but now maybe, since people know Catcher, they will know Jack, and think that since someone in their community knows him, he must be a nice person. Also, by working on Catchers boat with him, will make him seem like a real "Grand Mananer" because thats what just about everyone is around here.

a) I think that the author is doing this, so make it seem more full of action, and more exciting and suspisous.

b) I think that him being with Catcher and Everett has showed te community that he isnt such a bad guy after all, because i think the community knows that the two men are very good people.

c)I think its the boats, fishing, and war that makes the draw together. i think right now this is messed up, like with the name switching of the boats. and him finding his land. and Catcher getting sick. but it just keeps getting better =]

Anonymous said...

A) I think that the author has done t his because there are alot of different characters that he doesn't want usto forget. Also he might be trying to show us something like maybe Jack will eventually get his boat and he will meet up with Jenny.

B) I think that Everett and Catcher are very well respected members of the community and by Jack being good friends with both of them, he has earned their respect. Also I think that not as many people think that he is a stealer anymore.

C) I think that Freeman and Jack have hardly and similarities because Freeman is sort of bad and Jack is a good man who will do anything to try to help people. Catcher and Jack are related because they are both really friendly and they both care about people.

Anonymous said...

a)When the chapters go back and forth from person to person, it makes the reader think about both people and how whats going on in both of their lives ties together with the main part of the story.
b)I think that because Jack has made friendships with Everett and Cather, this shows to the people of Grand Manan that you can trust Jack, he is a man taht you can relate to in which you could talk to him easily.
c)Jack and Cather both have hearts for fishing, and being on Grand Manan Island. They have lots of similarities, Cather just won't give up fishing and Jack wouldn't either. On the other hand, Jack and Freeman are different. Jack wouldn't do anything to steal from someone, let alone kill someone like Freeman and Luther did.

#1 becasue it makes the book beter and more interesting.

#2 they are diffrent becasue they are diffrent people and people cant be the same so they have to be diffrent. right.

Anonymous said...

A) So we can get up dated on Jenny, Jack, Freemen & luther.

B) Jack has mad alot of friend like Catcher, Everett and Robert.

Anonymous said...

a}i think that he is doing this to make it more exciting and to keep
you on the edge

2} i think that they are starting to like him more because he is with catcher and they all like catcher so they like jack

Anonymous said...

well i think they are so i think they will avenchually get the boat and they will get the guy in jail i just know it.
i dont think he has given up on jenny i think he still loves her.
i think he has done it because he wants to make you curious so you will want to read more.
i think people are starting to see the real side of jack and know what he really is.
the boat i think.

Anonymous said...

a. I think that the author is doing this we are getting to the end of the book.

b. Yes it does because now that catcher is around jack other peole can trust jack, because he is busier with his life.

c. I think what draws them together is that they all like to fish, And they all fight.

Anonymous said...

1) I think athat they are doing this because the author wants to to let soemstuff happen in the story.

2) I think they help Jack because they can trust catcher because he and Everett rare very trust worthy.

3) I think athat tehy share the trate of fishing and they are different because freman has down very dirty work.

Anonymous said...

A) I think the author did that to make us want to read more to see what happens.
B) Catcher is a good person and respected Jack so now people respect Jack because he is with Catcher.
C) They all love to fish and they are all good people and get to know people before they judge them.

Anonymous said...

a) The chapters are becoming shorter and scenes switch back and forth more quickly. Why do you think the author has done this?
I think that the author is doing this is the book to make it more intresting and to always keep the readers thinking.

b) How do you think his growing friendships / partnerships with Catcher and Everett - obviously well-respected members of the community - has affected how other people view Jack?
I think that this has affected the way others think of Jack because if Catcher and Everett can trust him then so can everyone else.

c) What is it that draws Jack, Catcher and Freeman together? What traits do they share? How are they different?
They all love the sea, fishing and Grand Manan. They also are very caring and love to do what they can and will never give up. As Jack cared for the dog and Catcher is getting older and is not able to fish.

Anonymous said...

a) I think the author has made the chapters more quickly because I think he wants to make it more in point form. I think he wants the readers to wonder what is going to happen next and keep reading on.

b) I think because Catcher is so nice to Jack people in the community are finaly seeing that Jack is not so bad of a person so I think that is how they are growing

c) I think it is that they all are in the fishing business that is the traits they share. They all love the sea.

Anonymous said...

1)I think that the author I making it go back in forth so it will make the book more interesting and more exciting.

2)I think it has infected the way they look at jack because people don’t think they can trust him.

3)I think that they have a lot in cumin because of there interest like fishing.

Anonymous said...

a) I think the author is doing this because and is probably at the end make one big scene. So at the end we know what the plans are and the toughts if eack charaecter. Like I think that when Jack goes fishing Luther and Freemen are going to mislead them with there light.

b)Well it made people see Jack not as a crimnal for what they think he did the crime. But when they lear more about Jack they see the good side of him and not just go with what was wrong.

c) They are two people with strong hope and courage. But Jack seems a bit more mature then Everett. But they are two friends who share the same intrest and personalities.

Anonymous said...

A) I think that the chapters are getting shorter and that the scenes are switching faster, because a very big part is going to come up, and it is showing how the 2 scenes are going to get entangled with each other.

B) I think that since Jack is a friend to both Catcher and Everett that he is not considered so bad anymore. Since 2 members of the community that are respected, respect him, then the rest of the community feel that they can trust and help him more.

C) Jack, Catcher and Everett all like to fish, that is 1 thing that draws them together. They are all nice, and they like to joke around quite a bit. Every time they go on the boat, the story mentions them talking and joking.

Anonymous said...

a)I think that the scenes change quicker because luther and freman are now on the same island as jack and they jack seems to slowly unfold what they luther and freeman are plotting.

b)I think that Jack is beginning to be accepted more in the community because they all thought that he was a theif and now he is friends with some well respected members of the community so it all works out well.

c)What I think that Jack, Catcher, and Freeman have in common are, they are all fisherman on grand manan, but they are also different because freeman is doing it for different reasons, plus freeman seems like the guy who nobody likes in the book

Anonymous said...

a)I think the author as done this because he wants us to read more and more and more of the book. He leaves us on a hanger, in other words, he gets us thinking and wanting to read more.
b)I think he is getting along with everybody better and he has better relationships with people because he is trying to do better in life then what he has been doing.
c)They are different because they are not all the same. They all work hard fishing, and they take care of each other, like best buds. They get along well because they all have been through tough times.

Anonymous said...

I think that the Author is doing this to add drama and get you confused but at the same time it’s giving you more information about what’s happening. The fact that they all love to fish is a trait that makes them friends but they are different because one of then has to do it in secret, one of them might not be able to do it much longer and one of them is considered a thief

Anonymous said...

A)I thik its because it is getting closer to he end of the book.

B)Yes because everyone dosn't like him.

C)They all want money and they want to fish.

a) The pace of the action is beginning to pick up and the structure of the book is changing. The chapters are becoming shorter and scenes switch back and forth more quickly. Why do you think the author has done this? I think that the author has done this so that people would want to read the book and to make it seem more interesting and people like to read interesting books.

b) A dozen neighbors help Jack and Catcher get the boat into the water. A while back Jack was an outcast. How do you think his growing friendships / partnerships with Catcher and Everett - obviously well-respected members of the community - has affected how other people view Jack? I think that people now view jack as guy who works and helps people like everyone else would like to.

c) What is it that draws Jack, Catcher and Freeman together? What traits do they share? How are they different? I think that they all like each other and that they all care for each other. They all like to fish and love being on the water. I know that they are different in age but any other way I do not see how they are different.

1) I think that the real main reason that the author has done this would be because he wants to keep us on our toe's and make sure we are paying attention and get whats going on. As well as there are basicly three stories going around at once and they are. Whats Happening with Jenny, The whole Luther and Freemen scheme an of course the mains tory from what I can see and tell, The Jack and Catcher and Everett fishing thing. I feel that the big reason is because with a bunch of long chapters and long scenes with going back and forth slow that it would be confusing, so doing this will let us see whats going on better. Just like with a television remote. Example: You want to watch TV btu three of your favortie shows our on so what do you do? Switch back and forth. As this may be a little bit confusing it makes sense so that you dont see one and miss the other two. you get small glimpsis of whats happening a lot and as well like TV they dont stay still and wait for you to come back. They keep on going on and on. and I do feel that this whole three different stories will colide into one big one as we continue on farther into the book and when we get around the ending of the book... which should be pretty interesting as well.

2) Well as you said at the start of the story Jack was an outcast but now he is warming up to every one thanks to the fact that he is becomeing more friendly and hanging out with some very well resected people in the community (Catcher & Everett). Well Jack Catcher and Freenmen have one huge and obviosul trait. They all love the sea. Some traits might be hard to find in all three of them just because all of them are different. Like Freemen has the giak if stealing all of the money as Jack and Catcher have the goal of becoming well vauled fishermen who love the sea.

a)I think the author is doing this because the book is finishing. I think the author is also doing this because he wants the book to end quicker.
b)I think Jack I growing friendship with them by being with them more and talking to them a lot. I think they will grow better friendship after.
c)They have fishing in common because they both fish.

Anonymous said...

a) I think that the author is trying to get us to be wondering what’s going to happen next and try to leave us in suspense.

b) I think that the people of the community are starting to trust him more and they are relishing that he is a good person and not a thief.

c) I think that they all like the sea and they would rater be out on the sea then do a different job. They are different because Catcher would rather be out on the sea then suck at home and Everett would like to go fishing but his dad does not want him to go and Jack loves the sea and he wants to make a living from fishing.

Anonymous said...

a) I think the author has done this to create interest and make you follow the story carefully.

Anonymous said...

A) I think that the author has done this because he wants to make us wonder and he is trying to bug us..not really i like that maybe he is also doing , it becase something good might happen like Jack might meet up with Jenny.

b)I think that Jack being friends with Cather and Everett are showing the community and the other people that he is not a bad person after all.

c)I think it is the fishing and the boats that draw Jack Cather and Freeman back together. They have lots if simmalaritys such as they both love to fish they are both kind people the diffrnet things would be that Jack is a kind person and he wouldent still from someone or kill them like Freeman and Luther that is just plan old mean.

Anonymous said...

a) i think that the author did that because you get more whats going on and your getting used to it and stuff.

I think he has done this to create more of an effect and because people are going to have more to do with the story.

They might think that if they can trust him then we can trust him.

2) I think they help Jack because they can trust catcher because he and Everett rare very trust worthy.

3) I think athat tehy share the trate of fishing and they are different because freman has down very dirty work.

Everyone likes Catcher and since jack is his friend they start to see Jack as a good person.

Anonymous said...

a) I the author switches scenes and makes the chapters shorter now to give the story a more complex and exciting feeling as it progresses. It also helps the reader to see the story through the eyes of several different people which makes it more interesting.

b) Jack is somewhat more trusted now because of the people he associates with. The community assumes that if these two trusted people are with Jack Catcher and Everett must know and trust Jack. If Jack is trusted by them then the village can rely on him too.

c) Catcher, Everett and Jack are both pretty different men. Catcher and Everett are trusted, however. They all help each other grow with their relationship.

Anonymous said...

a) I think the author did this so that he doesnt give the story away and it leaves us thinking about that scene.

Anonymous said...

a)i think the author has done to make thee book more interesting. The story begins to speed up, some of the conflicts are solved, and then theirs new ones. it makes the ending more interesting, and draws you into the book.

b) well, catcher and everett have lived their all their life. everyone nows them, so everyone trusts them. so they think that if catcher and everett trust jack, they should to. but not everyone. alot of people turn against catcher and everett just because they trust jack.

c)Jack, catcher, and everett all want to go fishing, and they understand how each of them feel

Anonymous said...

1. the author is making things go more quickly because it makes things more exiting.
2. now that catcher and Everett like jack other people think he can't be all bad.
3. they all like to fish.

Anonymous said...

The author has changed the scenes to make it different. and they are shorter to make a different affect.

Jack, Catcher and Evertte all like going fishing. Also they all like going out just the 3 of them to go fishing.

Anonymous said...

a) I think the author started to do this to keep you on your toes, the book is starting to rap up and this will keep your interest. It also makes you wonder whats going to happen next.

b)I think other people are will ing to help him now because thaey realie that other people have forgiven him and so should they.

c)I think they're drawn together by their past and love of fishing.

Anonymous said...

a) I think that he wants us to thik what will happen next in the story.

b) I think that most people now don't hink that he stole that stuff because everyone is starting to know the real Jack.

c) The thing that they all have in common is fishing. They all love to fish and thats the traits that they all share.

Anonymous said...

a) I think the chapters are getting shorter and the scene changes often because the different stories are starting to come together.

I think that Jack still has feelings for Jenny because he thinks about her regulary. Also, he dropped the mug when Everett mentioned her name.

Anonymous said...

A)I think that the author was doing this because he wants us to remember the characters.
B) I think that he will be well known because people might think that catcher is a nice person, so Jack must be to. Also when people get to know Jack well they will find that he is a nice person.
C) I think that the thing that draws them together is that they all like to fish and go to church.

Anonymous said...

a) It shows that the conclusion is nearing, or the rising action. Although I don't see how shorter chapters would change much of anything... Maybe to make everything seem quicker?

b) It doesn't appear that peoples dispositions have changed towards Jack being with Catcher, in fact it seems people think lower of Catcher because he is fishing with the island criminal.

c) Well for starters they have a passion for fishing, and are all fairly nice people. Jack helped the dog, rather then simply killing it with a pseudo justification of ending its misery. And Catcher helped Jack with his dream of fishing by letting him fish with him. And uh... Everett... Well he seems nice.

Jack memorized the exact location of cigarette butts, that seems a little hard to do without knowing why...

And Jack still has feelings for Jenny, he drops his cup when he hears she's on a hospital ship. But she's like an unreachable goal for now. But Elizabeth is at the same time.

Anonymous said...

a)

b) I beleive the friendship of Catcher and Everett has helped Jack immensely. Those two don't judge and are good people.

c) They all want to fish. They all have dreams of fishing.

Anonymous said...

1) I think that they are making the chapters shorter because it makes it seam like there is more and more action going on and the story is getting quicker and quicker.

Anonymous said...

a) I think the author did that to let us know that the story is almost done and that the "adventure" is getting close to an end .

Anonymous said...

a) I think that he wants us to think what will happen next in the story.

b) I think that most people now don't hink that he stole that stuff because everyone is starting to know the real Jack.

c) The thing that they all have in common is fishing. They all love to fish and thats the traits that they all share.

Anonymous said...

a.) A lot is happening and a lot of scenes are getting closer to each other so the author tries to shorten the chapters to pause different scenes.

b.) As the people in town start seeing Jack with other people and how he gets treated with them, they see that Jack is more trusted then they think.

c.) Jack, Cather and Everett all like fishing and Jack really wants to so Cather and Everett knows how to fish and they take Jack with them. Longer they stay together, the stronger their friendship.
